CHIRP legacy build 20221217 (last Python 2 build: Windows, macOS, source)
=========================================================================
WHAT THIS IS
------------
The final build of the original, Python 2 generation of CHIRP, the free,
open-source (GNU GPL version 3) radio programming tool. Until 2022 these were
the "CHIRP daily" builds; they were renamed "legacy" when the project moved to
the Python 3 "CHIRP-next" builds. The legacy line was frozen in 2023 and
receives no updates. legacy-20221217 (17 December 2022) is the build the
project still links as its legacy download.
It is kept because it is the LAST CHIRP build for older operating systems.
The CHIRP download page lists its Windows support as "Windows 2000, XP,
Vista, 7, 8, 10, and 11"; CHIRP-next needs Windows 10 or later (64-bit) and
macOS 11 Big Sur or later. On a Windows 7/8 PC, or a Mac older than Big Sur,
this is the CHIRP that runs.
This entry holds three files from the build: the Windows installer, the
macOS application, and the source tarball.
Radios in this archive that this build supports (checked in the source):
- BaoFeng BF-F8HP: driver uv5r.py, model "BF-F8HP".
- BaoFeng UV-B5: driver uvb5.py, model "UV-B5" (experimental; also exposes
Test Mode settings).
- Yaesu VX-8DR: driver vx8.py, model "VX-8DR" (also VX-8R).
Not supported: the AnyTone AT-D878UVII DMR handheld.
The project advises against the legacy build unless a specific radio or
computer needs it; drivers fixed or added after December 2022 are only in
CHIRP-next.
APPLIES TO
----------
- Windows 2000 through 11 (installer), per the CHIRP download page.
- macOS, Intel and Apple Silicon: the CHIRP download page says the legacy
macOS build requires Python 2.7 to be installed.
- Linux: the source tarball (Python 2.7 with PyGTK). The project's own Linux
route for legacy was a Flatpak, not mirrored here.
Must NOT be used on: current systems that can run CHIRP-next; use CHIRP-next
there.
BEFORE STARTING
---------------
- The programming cable and its USB driver (see the CHIRP-next entry and the
Prolific driver entry in this archive).
- macOS: Python 2.7 installed, per the CHIRP download page.
- Save any existing CHIRP images before switching builds.

SHA256SUMS
SHA-256 checksums of the files above.
Also in the original build folder, not mirrored: chirp-legacy-20221217-win32.zip
(a no-install Windows copy), chirp-legacy-20221217.flatpak, Model_Support.html
and Test_Report.html. Their SHA-1 values are in the build's SHA1SUM file.
INSTALLATION
------------
Windows: run chirp-legacy-20221217-installer.exe and follow the installer.
CHIRP's wiki suggests installing CHIRP-next and keeping legacy as the
standalone copy; with this archive, the installer is the legacy copy
available.
macOS: unzip chirp-unified-legacy-20221217.app.zip and run the CHIRP
application, with Python 2.7 installed. macOS security prompts on first
launch were not tested.
Reading and writing a radio works as in CHIRP-next: Radio > Download From
Radio, choose port, vendor and model, follow the model's prompt, save the
image, edit, then Radio > Upload To Radio. The VX-8DR clone-mode steps are
given in the CHIRP-next entry's README (the same driver prompt exists in this
build's vx8.py).
VERIFYING
---------
CHIRP's About box shows the build name (legacy-20221217); the exact menu path
was not confirmed. After an upload, download from the radio again and compare
with the saved image.
IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG
-----------------------
- A radio that fails in legacy may work in CHIRP-next, which has later driver
fixes; the reverse also happens occasionally, which is the reason the project
keeps legacy available.
- Cable/driver problems: see the Prolific driver entry.
- The legacy build receives no fixes; problems will not be addressed by the
project.
DOWNGRADING
-----------
This is already the last legacy build; earlier daily builds were not kept in
this archive (see PROVENANCE.md). Images saved in CHIRP-next may not open in
legacy; this was not tested.
