Baofeng UV-B5
Overview
The Baofeng UV-B5 is the legacy, earlier-generation dual-band (2 m / 70 cm) amateur handheld in the bench drawer — a 5 W analog-FM HT introduced around 2012-2013, before the UV-5R popularity wave and before the mature-CHIRP era that followed it. Its defining feature is a tactile rotary channel-select knob (paired with a separate volume control) and a distinctive orange-backlit dot-matrix LCD that sets it apart from every UV-5R variant at an across-the-bench glance. It survives as the reliable backup-of-the-backup and loaner radio — archival-functional, not first-pick. Context
The UV-B5 predates the UV-5R explosion that made "Baofeng" a household name, and the architectural break with that later series is its rotary channel knob — some operators still prefer it over the menu-and-keypad UI of every UV-5R successor. It uses a unique BL-B battery form factor (not interchangeable with the BL-5 / BL-8), a 99-channel flat memory list, and one of the better-debugged community CHIRP drivers. Superseded for active use by the Baofeng F8HP and the AnyTone D878UVII, it stays in the drawer as the analog-only backup.
